    DETERMINING WAIT TIME FOR RETURN OF MISSED CALL

    Techniques are presented herein that help a calling party understand how long they should expect to wait, following a missed telephone call to a called party, to receive a return call from the called party. In support of that functionality, the presented techniques may learn about a called party’s behaviors (through, for example, entries in their electronic calendar, entries in a to-do list, etc. and their calling patterns) and create (e.g., reminder) entries in a called party’s calendar. A first aspect of the presented techniques encompasses determining an amount of time that should be allowed for a call between a calling and a called party; a second aspect encompasses determining when a called party is next available to make a call; and a third aspect encompasses determining the times when a called party typically returns calls

    Cost-effectiveness analysis of the Parkinson’s KinetiGraph and clinical assessment in the management of Parkinson's Disease

    Aims: The Parkinson’s KinetiGraph (PKG) is a wrist-worn movement recording system that collates continuous, objective, data during daily activities in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) providing a report for clinicians. This study explores the cost-effectiveness of adding the PKG to routine PD assessments. Methods: A de novo Markov model of three health states: uncontrolled, controlled and death compared PKG plus routine assessment by a Movement Disease Specialist (MDS) versus routine assessment. Uncontrolled and controlled states were based on the Movement Disorder Society - Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) II and III scores. Transition between health states was dependent on improvement in MDS-UPDRS II and III, and transition to death state on all cause-mortality and PD-specific relative mortality risk. Markov cycle length was yearly beyond year 1 and lifetime horizon 22 years. Limitations: PKG evidence incorporated in this analysis is based on findings from one clinical trial. Health state utilities were mapped and the probability of patients progressing from uncontrolled to controlled health state at the second visit and beyond was derived from a bootstrap method which assumed a normal distribution for MDS-UPDRS. Results: The addition of the PKG to usual PD assessments is a cost-effective intervention. PKG plus routine assessment is associated with lower total costs compared to routine assessment (£141,950 versus £159,312) and improved quality adjusted life years (7.88 versus 7.61), resulting in an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of -£64,978.99 and a net monetary benefit of £22,706.37 using a £20,000 threshold. Results were robust across sensitivity and scenario analyses. Conclusions: Management of PD involves monitoring and evaluation of symptoms to assess disease progression and ensure appropriate treatment choice. Adding the PKG to clinical assessment in routine care allows for improved and objective identification of PD motor symptoms which can be used in clinical decision making to improve patient outcomes

    Past 140-year environmental record in the northern South China Sea: Evidence from coral skeletal trace metal variations

    About 140-year changes in the trace metals in Porites coral samples from two locations in the northern South China Sea were investigated. Results of PCA analyses suggest that near the coast, terrestrial input impacted behavior of trace metals by 28.4%, impact of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) was 19.0%, contribution of war and infrastructure were 14.4% and 15.6% respectively. But for a location in the open sea, contribution of War and SST reached 33.2% and 16.5%, while activities of infrastructure and guano exploration reached 13.2% and 14.7%. While the spatiotemporal change model of Cu, Cd and Pb in seawater of the north area of South China Sea during 1986-1997 were reconstructed. It was found that in the sea area Cu and Cd contaminations were distributed near the coast while areas around Sanya, Hainan had high Pb levels because of the well-developed tourism related activities.     Characterization of the Phytochelatin Synthase of Schistosoma mansoni

    Treatment for schistosomiasis, which is responsible for more than 280,000 deaths annually, depends exclusively on the use of praziquantel. Millions of people are treated annually with praziquantel and drug resistant parasites are likely to evolve. In order to identify novel drug targets the Schistosoma mansoni sequence databases were queried for proteins involved in glutathione metabolism. One potential target identified was phytochelatin synthase (PCS). Phytochelatins are oligopeptides synthesized enzymatically from glutathione by PCS that sequester toxic heavy metals in many organisms. However, humans do not have a PCS gene and do not synthesize phytochelatins. In this study we have characterized the PCS of S. mansoni (SmPCS). The conserved catalytic triad of cysteine-histidine-aspartate found in PCS proteins and cysteine proteases is also found in SmPCS, as are several cysteine residues thought to be involved in heavy metal binding and enzyme activation. The SmPCS open reading frame is considerably extended at both the N- and C-termini compared to PCS from other organisms. Multiple PCS transcripts are produced from the single encoded gene by alternative splicing, resulting in both mitochondrial and cytoplasmic protein variants. Expression of SmPCS in yeast increased cadmium tolerance from less than 50 µM to more than 1,000 µM. We confirmed the function of SmPCS by identifying PCs in yeast cell extracts using HPLC-mass spectrometry. SmPCS was found to be expressed in all mammalian stages of worm development investigated. Increases in SmPCS expression were seen in ex vivo worms cultured in the presence of iron, copper, cadmium, or zinc. Collectively, these results indicate that SmPCS plays an important role in schistosome response to heavy metals and that PCS is a potential drug target for schistosomiasis treatment.     Graphene and Related Materials for Resistive Random Access Memories

    Graphene and related materials (GRMs) are promising candidates for the fabrication of resistive random access memories (RRAM). Here, we analyze, classify and evaluate this emerging field, and summarize the performance of the RRAM prototypes using GRMs. Graphene oxide, amorphous carbon films, transition metal dichalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitride and black phosphorous can be used as resistive switching media, in which the switching can be governed either by the migration of intrinsic species or penetration of metallic ions from adjacent layers. Graphene can be used as electrode to provide flexibility and transparency, as well as an interface layer between the electrode and dielectric to block atomic diffusion, reduce power consumption, suppress surface effects, limit the number of conductive filaments in the dielectric, and improve device integration. GRMs-based RRAMs fit some non-volatile memory technological requirements like low operating voltages 10 years, endurance >109 cycles and power consumption ~10 pJ/transition still remain a challenge.     SARS-CoV-2 Omicron is an immune escape variant with an altered cell entry pathway

    Vaccines based on the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 are a cornerstone of the public health response to COVID-19. The emergence of hypermutated, increasingly transmissible variants of concern (VOCs) threaten this strategy. Omicron (B.1.1.529), the fifth VOC to be described, harbours multiple amino acid mutations in spike, half of which lie within the receptor-binding domain. Here we demonstrate substantial evasion of neutralization by Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 variants in vitro using sera from individuals vaccinated with ChAdOx1, BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273. These data were mirrored by a substantial reduction in real-world vaccine effectiveness that was partially restored by booster vaccination. The Omicron variants BA.1 and BA.2 did not induce cell syncytia in vitro and favoured a TMPRSS2-independent endosomal entry pathway, these phenotypes mapping to distinct regions of the spike protein. Impaired cell fusion was determined by the receptor-binding domain, while endosomal entry mapped to the S2 domain. Such marked changes in antigenicity and replicative biology may underlie the rapid global spread and altered pathogenicity of the Omicron variant
